DiMuSa
Digitization of teaching at music schools in Saxony-Anhalt
Objectives and project content

The Ministry of Economics, Science, and Digitalization of Saxony-Anhalt funded the DiMuSA project to make public music schools fit for the digital present. The initiator was the Saxony-Anhalt Music Schools Association (LVdM), which also contributed funds to the project. The state grant is provided as part of the state’s Digital Agenda.

To this end, the challenges of each music school (mission statement, pedagogical and didactic focus, rural or urban area, technical infrastructure) were collected, evaluated, and summarized in virtual idea and creative workshops and on-site meetings. In collaboration with the Saxony-Anhalt Music School Association (LVdM) and the Magdeburg-Stendal University of Applied Sciences, the technical equipment of the teachers was improved with 440 iPads. Stakeholders at more than 200 locations and 20 music schools were networked more closely across the region, and digital skills were strengthened together with music school teachers, management, administration, and the association.

Tasks and results

As the project lead, LVdM was responsible for the

  • Organization of the procurement of the equipment and logistics of the introduction
  • Development of aids for the inventory and the sustainable use of the technology
  • Networking of all actors from the municipal to the federal level
  • organization of events

The research group SPiRIT provided scientific support in the form of

  • Secondary analysis on digital music school teaching (literature), collection of tools and best practices, and provision of experiences from other projects
  • Inventory of existing technology and needs in the 20 music schools of the state via qualitative on-site interviews
  • Design and implementation of three virtual events in collaboration with LVdM (kick-off idea workshop on May 28, creative workshop on July 09, final event on Nov. 25, 2021)
  • Online documentation and evaluations for the events and project activities
  • Development of handouts on network infrastructure and data protection
  • Preparation of a school practical brochure on a scientific basis
  • Scientific publication of project results
