ICWL - Web Based Learning

ICWL is an annual conference for the advancement of online learning. The conference was founded by the Hong Kong Web Society, which hosted the first conference in 2002. The main focus of the conference is put on the research results of technology-enhanced learning and the resulting future of educational technologies.

This year’s ICWL – 18th International Conference on Web Based Learning took place from 23 – 25 September 2019 at the University of Applied Sciences Magdeburg-Stendal (Campus Magdeburg). The 18th conference was hosted by the SPiRIT research group under the organizational direction of Prof. Dr. Michael A. Herzog and with the active help of the scientific assistants Leonore Franz und Veronika Weiß. 100 scientists and students from 32 countries attended the daily lectures, workshops and discussions. New content of digital educational opportunities, which concentrated mainly on online teaching, were examined from different perspectives, constructively discussed and further developed.

The previously submitted papers, as the basis of the lectures, were selected in advance by the International Programme Committee. A total of fifteen full papers, fifteen short papers and seven poster papers were selected for the conference. All papers presented were subsequently published in a Springer Lecture Notes on Computer Sciences (LNCS). The topics ranged from the analysis of learning data to the future of collaborative learning.

Among the participants were two excellent keynote speakers: Irwin King from the Chinese University of Hong Kong and Sabine Graf, professor at the Athabasca University in Canada. This year again, the thematically related International Symposium on Emerging Technologies for Education was combined with the ICWL – a tradition that has been part of the conference days for four years already and which supports and supplements them professionally.

A particularly interesting debate on women in the engineering sciences arose during the public panel discussion entitled ‘Women in Engineering – Sharing Statistics, Prograss and Positive Experience’, which took place on the evening of 23 September. A presentation of the different situations of female engineers in Greece, Italy, Brazil and Germany provided an opportunity for a lively exchange. On the German side, Anne Lequy, Rector of the University of Applied Sciences, and Gilian Gerke, Professor of Resource Management, Recycling and Sustainability enriched the topic.
